The Coffee Sniffer’s ROAST

Inspired by the legendary Baron Von Beanhardi, our house roast is a nod (and a sniff) to a dark time in the history of coffee, when it was taxed so highly by Peter the Great, it became a black market commodity and underground industry.

The LEGEND OF THE Coffee SniffERS

The Coffee Sniffers were a group of aroma detecting experts who were employed by the Kingdom of Prussia between 1781 and 1787 by decree of King Frederick (the Great). Their mandate was to keep a watchful eye (or nose, rather) on the roasting of coffee beans. Why you ask? Well, His Royal Highness had levied a hefty tax on coffee, in a bid to fatten his coffers and bolster the brewing of local beer.

Baron Von Beanhardi, being a steadfast servant of Frederick the Great, got an early whiff of the king’s coffee taxation plans. As a secret coffee connoisseur, Beanhardi was beside himself. He saw the high tax as something that might make it impossible to source his daily dose of caffeine.

Immediate action was taken. He started discreetly importing it, roasting it, and selling it, right under the king’s nose. The Coffee Sniffers were no match for Baron Beanhardi, who always managed to stay one step ahead. And so, coffee in the kingdom was saved.

We now present to you, The Coffee Sniffer’s Roast, a tribute to the cleverness and daring of Baron Von Beanhardi. A coffee fit for a king, and the rest of us mere mortals.
